No Work And All Play

I was sent home from work yesterday a little early so I could finish preparations for the picture above.
This one is a bad one. I was told not to come back to work till Friday. The problem with that is there is nothing to do except look out the window.
Right now with the wind chill it feels like it's below zero. I have a couple of people that live down the street that have busted pipes and no water. Being a good neighbor and having the only 4x4 on the block I have made trips into town to get them repair parts.

As far as the animals go, even though we did some massive prep work for this storm we are not fairing well. One of the baby goats is in the house next to the fire. We found her legs up in the shelter so we are trying to bring her back. All the rest of them are doing fine for now.
Some of the chickens are missing and we have searched and searched but cannot find them. We locked them up last night and kept them on lock down during the day and just worried some did not make it in. It was dark when we shut the door so they might have been missed. Maybe they were just hunkered down real good and we missed them.

I am going on a search and find mission in the morning with my buddy Dave to find more wood. As it is right now we have enough wood to last till a little after noon tomorrow. I guess I should have worried more about that than building chicken coops this weekend.
Try and stay warm.

  1. You're definitely getting hit harder with this storm than we are. I hope you get through the next few days with minimal hassle. We have plenty of firewood and a heater insert in the fireplace. Plenty of food and water and supplies too.

I sure wish they'd send ME home until Friday! We both have to drive 40 miles each way to work tomorrow. I will leave 30 minutes early (5:30am) and take the truck for better traction. Yeoldfurt doesn't have to leave until midday but then he is driving home at 9pm. So we'll both have plenty of ice and wind to contend with.

    Keep warm.

  2. Hey Redneck, you're getting it worse than MT. Hang in there and stay warm. I will tell ya when we got up this morning our outside temps was -22F add in the windchill( winds blowing from the SE at 30-40 mph) it's -45F to -50F After only 15 minutes outside feeding this morning I felt like a popsicle and I have long johns, sweats, heavy woolen socks, a heavy carhart chore coat, good gloves and good snowboots! They tell us the wind is moving this bitter cold out of here, I sure hope so.

Praying for you and yours, keep that stove a burning and also praying for your little goat and missing chickens.
    Blessings and bundle up,
    Kelle

  5. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. We did run out of wood but found enough today for tomorrow's heat. The heater in the house works but there is a real chance of blackouts. The power company has been doing rolling blackouts lasting up to several hours so we are keeping one day of wood in reserve just for that occasion.
They say the weather will break this weekend and it should get up into the 50's. Lets hope so.
Thanks again and I hope you all are staying warm as well.
Kelle, my goodness, I don't see how yall do it.

  6. Redneck,
I don't do it very well, I get REALLY crabby, LOL!!!! I really, really do NOT like bitter cold and getting up ever two hours to stoke the stove well..... it just adds to the crabbiness*wink*
We sure sucked down the wood too, probably burned a 1/2 cord during this cold snap. Today it's FINALLY moving out, still -12F with windchill but better :o) Tomorrw is supposed to be 47F YEAH!!!!!
    Blessings,
    Kelle

  8. Kelle, crabby is not the word for what is going on here. More like down right mean.

SFG, It has been four days now with no sign of them. We wont be sure until this all melts.
