Just An Old Hippie

I was trying desperately to get on the computer last night to do a blog post but.....
One of the problems with having only one computer in the house is that the schools give the kids homework that can only be done with the internet and sometimes it takes them hours to do the research needed to complete the assignment. I often ask them what would happen if we did not have the internet. They always just shrug their shoulders and give me that "I don't know" look. I cannot understand it, I have not seen them bring home an actual text book in a long time. Are they even learning anything besides how to surf the net and use up all the printer ink?

Last night was probably a good thing I was not able to get on. I was just wanting to rant and rave about disrespectful, uncaring and un-neighborly people anyway. Here is the short version;
I spend a lot of time, energy and expense to keep my animals on my place and my place alone. The rest just let their dogs, goats and cats run the countryside not caring where they go, what they tear up or what they kill. If you take matters into your own hands and shoot one of their loving pets they care so much about, they call the sheriff on you as if you were the one that did something wrong.
I tell you what it is, it's them dag gum city folks is what it is. They move from a little yard in town out to the country and think they can do whatever to whoever they want to.
Listen to this, a guy down the street bought a goat. He did not have a piece of fence on his property but he bought a goat. The wife stopped by there a couple of times to inform them the goat was sitting in the road and is going to get run over. They just shrugged it off and said it will move. Well sure as the world, it got run over, by them! No kidden, they run over their own goat. They thought that being in the country animals needed to be free and roam too and throw. The poor goat was sleeping under the truck when they went and backed up.

Last night our good friends D&R had their little dog killed right off their back steps by some wondering dogs from down the road. When the owners of the dogs were confronted, all they could say was it was a mistake because their dogs could not have done that.

That's more ranting than I wanted to do tonight but to sum it all up, as I get older I find myself and my kind becoming more and more obsolete.

Kinda like that song from the early 80's by the Bellamy Brothers, "Old Hippie"
If you don't know it here are the Lyrics:

He turned thirty-five last Sunday
In his hair he found some gray
But he still ain't changed his lifestyle
He likes it better the old way
So he grows a little garden in the back yard by the fence
He's consuming what he's growing nowadays in self defense
He get's out there in the twilight zone
Sometimes when it just don't make no sense

He gets off on country music
Cause disco left him cold
He's got young friends into new wave
But he's just too friggin' old
And he dreams at night of Woodstock and the day John Lennon died
How the music made him happy and the silence made him cry
Yeah he thinks of John sometimes
And he has to wonder why

Chorus:
He's an old hippie and he don't know what to do
Should he hang on to the old
Should he grab on to the new
He's an old hippie...his new life is just a bust
He ain't trying to change nobody
He's just trying real hard to adjust

He was sure back in the sixties that everyone was hip
Then they sent him off to Vietnam on his senior trip
And they forced him to become a man while he was still a boy
And in each wave of tragedy he waited for the joy
Now this world may change around him
But he just can't change no more

Chorus

Well, he stays away a lot now from the parties and the clubs
And he's thinking while he's joggin' 'round
Sure is glad he quit the hard drugs
Cause him and his kind get more endangered everyday
And pretty soon the species will just up and fade away
Like the smoke from that torpedo...just up and fade away

  1. I can't believe I don't recognize that song. Thought I knew 'em all :)

We have "neighbors" that let their dogs run too. We are fenced and cross fenced and our dogs stay put. We almost called the Sheriff once because of a mean Rotty, but the people got rid of him. One of their dogs jumps the fence and does his "business" in MY yard! Guess he knows we'll pick up after him :) I don't know what the answer is. We have kindly let our neighbors know that we don't appreciate their animals on our property, but these folks are our friends as well so it's a fine line.

As for having only one computer and kids that have to use it - I feel your pain!

    Have a great weekend!

  2. LOL, I love that old song! i sing it all the time! ARG on the loose dogs, I put buck shot in the dogs that cross my property line. Had one too many chickens killed, Momma done playin. LOL on the dumbass that ran his own goat over, people really are ignorant. Well, at least it's not horses or hogs coming over for a visit...

  3. That is my theme song! Just like mmpaints, I go around singing it. I have become the proverbial "grumpy old man" because it seems folks just don't have walking around sense anymore. And those of us that are trying to preserve common sense and get back to basic living are looked at as wackos.

  4. Just wanted to say I check your blog often... It's great!!! I'm from Northern NJ, and know how you feel... I'm 36 and feel like I'm the "grumpy old woman"... All the old timer's have been leaving because the city folk are invading...I have a neighbor(down the road)that was in my backyard (my woods) that I pay crazy taxes for, cutting my trees so they could make a nice trail for their horses... Unbelievable!! They think any property around is theirs for the taking... After that incident, and telling them repeatedly they could not use my woods for riding their horses, their 2 German Shepherds attacked my dog in my woods(while we were all out for a nice walk) ... Haven't called the cops yet, I wasn't brought up that way, but I'm going to the next time (which I'm sure won't be too far off). So just wanted to let you know that I absolutely feel your pain... And I don't have the faintest clue on what to do, you can't teach them respect for others' now, can you?
Where ignorance is bliss it is folly to be wise...

  5. Good song! We talk to people once or twice about their animals. If they don't do anything about them, we just quit discussing the animals. But, for some reason, they just "disappear." LOL. You think YOU have problems. We had a guy who let his CATTLE run loose. He even had a BULL in with them. You know as well as I do, a barb wire fence(ours) won't keep two mad bulls from fighting each other......I don't know what ever happened to that bull.......lol

  6. Thank all yall for the comments. I hate to say I am glad I am not the only one that knows this pain.
I really think it makes us better people. Seeing others not caring and taking advantage of other people stirs me to do a better job with what I got. Oh sure it makes me mad and I huff and puff and even threaten to eat their children sometimes, but in the end I make my fences stronger and make sure all my stuff is put away after completing a job.
I cannot complain about someone else's trash blowing in the wind if I don't keep mine from doing it first.
I wish you all good luck with the problems yall have and maybe the other people will get the hint.
