Chili and Beans

We drove along way to cook beans and chili this weekend. As a matter of fact it was the furthest we have
driven to due such a thing. A two and a half hour drive to have your butt kicked is not what I had in mind.
We don't even take much with us anymore. Last year we loaded two trucks with props and attention getters and quickly found out it was just too much to set up and break down. Now we take just the bare minimum to cook with.
People were cooking outside and inside. We chose to cook out because of the cloud cover and lower temps. I didn't break a sweat until 2:00 and that's great.
Our beans made the top ten and our chili made the top twenty. I was hoping for the top five in both but that's just how it goes. In the end the trophies are great if you make, but the reason why we do it is for the charities and the chili cooking family we have grown to love.

Next weekend we are cooking in St. Joe Texas. I would like to say we have a good chance there but you just never know. Maybe one day I will dial it in and walk a lot more.

I had jury duty today so I am off work. I don't mind it too much, at least it's something different and I get a whole $10.00 for my troubles.

Talk to ya in a day or two,
MDR

    1. I understand Steve,
It's at the rodeo arena just South of town. I bet they will need judges.

  2. Top ten! YAY! "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog." That's my favorite saying and it applies to a lot of scenarios in life. You're gonna hang in there no matter what because of the camaraderie and the charities that benefit. Having your dear wife at your side makes you the real beneficiary.

The ribbons are just a sideline. You've already won, dear man.

  3. To bad you couldn't have fed the jury some of that chili and beans, it would have made for an amusing trial and maybe a mistrial.

  4. MDR,

Was that the cook off in Oklahoma (the long drive). Beans 10th place and chili top 20's, that's good my friend!!!!! Don't be disappointed, you did very well.

St Joe, TX, that's not to far from the Gainesville area if I remember correctly. Good luck there in St Joe!!!

I so wish we were heading down that way. It will be a while before we head back toward TX, hubby has some testing for his neck and back. Once this is taken care of we will head south.

    1. No Sandy it was in Wichita Falls.
I don't know what place the beans were but they were in the top 10 but not 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

St. Joe is near Gainesville, about another 20 minutes to the West on 82.

Let me know when you head this way, can't wait to see y'all

  5. So, does your employeer let you keep that $10? When I worked for Sprint and we had jury duty, they paid us our regular salary, but we had to turn in what we earned at jury duty to the company. I hated that. I could walk to work, I could not walk to jury duty. I once had federal jury duty. I earned $18. It costs me one hour time each way to drive there, and $26 in fuel. And, I had to turn in my $18. Stunk.

    1. I have never heard of such a thing April. I keep it, it's my right. I didn't have a choice but to go.
I would look into that as far a law thing, if it's really worth it.
