A Couple Of Things

On the 22nd of this month I will be speaking at a preppers/homesteaders group here in North Texas on Rain Water Harvesting techniques and use. If anyone is close by and wants to attend you can email me. On the agenda will also be a couple more hot topics you don't want to miss.

This is funny right here;
Here is something you may not know about me, some would call me a "Germaphobe" because I cannot stand people not practicing good personal hygiene. In public I find myself aware of what I touch, people around me and potential hazard zones that will get me sick. For instance, in the public bathroom have you ever noticed when someone finishes and just leaves without washing? I do and I have to find a creative way to open the door without directly touching the door handle. You can call me a freak, but it's just one of those things, I don't want to touch your junk. Have you ever seen someone sneeze or cough in your direction without covering their face and you act like the matrix and like slow motion you dodge the mucus mist? I do.   
The reason I am telling you all this is because for the past couple of years I have not even caught the sniffles. I contribute this to my daily herbal intake and safe public handling. All that came crashing down last weekend. I have been so sick this week I could hardly get out of bed. I have not called in sick to work in over 10 years but I really wanted to this week. The good thing is I am on the rebound now.
Last Friday night I threw caution to the wind and touched too many areas without bathing in sanitizer afterwards. I know that's where I picked it up. The one time I chose to live like all the rest and I have paid for it. I think it's a little ironic.
If I could never leave the safety of my house I don't think I ever would.

Production

Let me just say it was a full and productive weekend.

Saturday I made it down to the farm to start the demo on the old house I build years ago. It has so much sentimental value the only way to tear it down is to put those thoughts out of my head while in the process.  If not I will spend all my time sitting and reminiscing.
It is amazing how I can hardly remember yesterday, but while walking through the old place every square inch brings back a memory. I know it's just a structure that is rotten and unlivable now, but there was a time that old house held so much love and commitment. It's where my kids were brought home from the hospital, learned to walk, talk and latter learned to run and play. It was where a young married couple started a lifetime.
If you can't understand the emotional stronghold I have on this place then I'm sorry. It breaks my heart to do what needs to be done and I am sure I will shed a tear once it's done.

Saying all that, we were able to get all the siding off, electrical out, cabinets, sinks and windows this weekend. Next weekend we will start on the roof and work our way down. It will take a while and I can't start on the girls condo until I get this all the way done.
Next week I will take some pictures of the old place.
          
Early Sunday morning found me over at my Dad's for a good old fashioned chicken killing. He had a bunch of birds we needed to process and the cold temperatures made it perfect weather to do it in.

 Once we got started we had a great system turning out a finished bird about every minute or so.

The guy on the left was the hatchet man, I (middle) was in charge of the chicken plucker and dad (on the right) was the cleaner. My oldest daughter was also there catching the roosters and bringing them to us.   

 The end result is was four full coolers of naked birds ready for the fryer.

These birds stayed in the salt water overnight, then washed and put in freezer bags.

It only took two hours from set up to clean up to do all those chickens. At that pace you could almost make a living at it, but who would want to.

After that, the rest of the day was getting ready for the week and the storms coming in. They say we will get 3 to 6 inches of rain and we need it. The last rain was soaked in and it did nothing for the lake levels. I hope this time it will give us some runoff. Plus my rain water tanks need to be topped off.

New MDR Members

First off I want to give a big thanks to homesteadsurvival for featuring the Beer Can Heater on their blog. Welcome all who has come over and I hope you hang around. More projects are on their way.

This little project has already had over 5,000 hits from being featured on different websites, I am honored. 

Project Update

For those keeping up with my latest project, I wanted to give a quick update on the Beer Can Heater build.

Thanks to my friend who is a professional beer drinker, I have collected all 102 cans. It would have taken me months to have enough cans if I did it myself and it took him less than a week. You can see my small contribution to the collection in the back bottom corner. If you priced it all out, that is about $100.00 bucks in beer.

 For the glass I am using an old storm door that measures 63 1/2" tall and 27" wide. The frame is built to where the glass sits on the center of the 2x4s so I can use the hold down clips I took from the door.
If you are wondering what the wood frame is sitting on, that is my roll around work bench I built. It's kinda like a butcher block table so when the top gets all beat up I can sand it down and have a new table again. Genius hu?

Unfortunately work has kept me from doing much more to it this week, but this weekend looks promising. The next step is to drill holes in all the cans, fasten them together in columns of 10 and then paint them black. While that is drying I will finish the frame and air collecting points.
I probably will not get the heater all the way done this weekend because I have some other pressing issues I need to attend to, but I should be able to make a good showing. 

I wanted to say thank you to all the emails I receive on a daily basis. I enjoy reading and responding them.
