Who Needs Folgers

We spent the week harvesting, drying and grinding Mesquite Beans. We now have enough coffee and tea to last another year.

Mesquite trees are abundant in Texas and just as the Native Americans and the first settlers did, we do as well.
It does take some getting use to, but it is all natural and has no chemical additives. You can make all kinds of stuff with these. I want to try some Mesquite Muffins one day just to see how it would turn out.

Yup, I could not find the plunger so I was using a mag light to push the beans in the grinder. Don't laugh, It worked.

There you go, the first cup of Mesquite Bean Coffee of the year.
It's even better if you add a shot of whiskey.

  1. You might mix some roasted chicory root with it. They used that in the civil war and some companies still add it to coffee.

    1. It grows along every road around here but they cultivate it in places.

    1. It really depends on the tree. Some trees are bitter and some are sweet.
I have had some compare it to a green tea like taste. It has it's own sweetener in it so it has a hint of honey.

  6. Chicory root was the drink of choice for my mom and dad, then the old A&P started selling it. I think my gag reflex would kick in if I even sipped your 'coffee' of choice. If it's different in any way, I always up-chuck.

I keep asking Joe why he ruins perfectly good Coke with a shot of whiskey. *here comes the gag reflex*!

    1. The question you should be asking LJ is, "Why is he ruining the whiskey with that Coke?"

  9. Never heard of Mesquite Bean Coffee, but that might be because I'm from the other end of the country (MN). I have, of course, heard of whiskey. I'd be willing to take a shot of both. ;)

  10. MDR,

Mesquite coffee, now that sounds good. Have you tried mesquite honey? My MIL tells me it's wonderful.
