Goodbye May

What a tough month May has been. More so in these past couple of weeks.

We have already been threatened with fires twice now. No rain for over a month has made the green pastures turn bone dry and the abundant grass has now turned into a nightmare waiting to happen. One large 600 acre fire has already gotten so close we could started evacuation procedures.
I fear it will only get worse in the coming months.

On the flip side this week has brought relief by way of some rain. The problem with that is the mid ninety degree days stir up sever thunder storms in the late evenings.
Every night this week, forty to seventy mile per hour winds have ran it's course through the Mini Farm creating damage and problems.
The green house was ripped apart by the high winds two nights ago and what is left of gardens are all broke and down from the one last night. There are other things that have been damaged as well but there is no use in listing them.

With the rains also come no work. I am in a business that depends on the weather. Good weather means good paychecks and bad weather means bad ones. It is the nature of the beast I guess.

From one extreme to the other, never on middle ground. One step forward, two back. Yin & Yang, Blah, Blah, Blah.....

As you can tell there has been nothing good to write about. I have racked my brain to try and entertain you good folks, but yet the words will not come.

This weekend will be all about getting things back in order. I need to re-shingle the chick barn and fix the greenhouse for sure. Then do some fence mending and fix some other little things that were tore up.
I hope to save as much as I can from the gardens, if not the pigs will be eating really good for the next couple of days.

Y'all have a good weekend.

  2. I am going to stop complaining about our weather. At least when I do something to the garden it stays put. I'm so sorry yours is wreaked. Hopefully the fires stay away from your place.

  3. Sorry to hear that so many things are going wrong. We are short in the rain department here yet the pigs seem to keep enough mud in their pens, then when it does rain we have too much. We have not gotten any damaging winds though, even from the tropical storm which I am grateful for.

  4. Dang MDR! I hate that. The fire situation in Texas is far from over. I just hope it gets better soon because another summer like last year will surely be devastating.

  6. Glad you guys escaped the fires, never a place or position you want to be in(I only know becuz my hubby worked on a wildfire team all over the US for 2 years so I got to hear a lot of stories). Hopefully you can get everything back up and running again. The rain situation up here is getting pretty bad. In the month of May we normally see around 4 and a half inches and we have only had about an inch so far, everything is drying up bad. The corn fields up the road have hardly grown at all and the grass is turning brown and the leaves on parts of trees are dying. My hubby cut down a tree the other day for future firewood, a tree that was supposed to be green, and he was splitting the logs in 2 swings (we shouldn't be able to do that). Hang in there...

  7. I hate to hear about your storm damage. Although, I understand about needing some rain. We have only had a 1/4 in this month. Although they are calling for rain tonight. And like you, it's suppose to be storms. I hope we don't have any damage too. I hope everything comes out ok for you guys.

  9. Mother Nature has no mercy. You work so hard to get all that you have put together. I'm sorry about the greenhouse, I LOVED reading about it while knowing that I would love to have one and my daughters would have enjoyed having one as well, but they are grown and gone. Hopefully some plants can be salvaged, even if damaged.

It makes me think about our ancestors and how one bad storm would be devastating to their pantry for the year. I hope the weather will cooperate for you to do as much work in-house and out-of-house, as needed and desired.

Do you ever get to relax?

    1. Lana, If I depended on my gardens 100% I would not know what to do. For the past two weeks they have fed us and it has been good. The tomatoes did not all break so I was able to stand most of them back up. Some of the peppers are gone and the Blackeyed pees don't look to good and most of the corn made it. The greenhouse is wrecked though.

When things at the farm are going well, that is when I relax. If things need to be done I feel guilty if I am not doing them.
Maybe one day I will be able to.

    2. Well, if anyone had to depend on getting things going on a 100% level, you COULD do it. At least you have the know-how, if it were necessary. I am intrigued by your solar power inventions and creativity. I think this is an area, especially for us Southerners, to explore more thoroughly. We use solar power on a minimal level to help us when on our acreage and I can't imagine being without it.

Looks like your relaxing minutes have disappeared with the winds. Hope you can get things restored as soon as possible, sorry it's in the heat of Texas summer!

    3. Lana I figure one full hard day and things will pretty much be back in shape. I have to work at the job this weekend and a big dinner Saturday night so that leaves only Sunday.
I ain't worried though. It will all get done one way or the other.

  10. this has been one really weird year for weather related stuff and to the extremes..we have had everything but snow and ice and i really would not be shocked senseless if that happened since we have had everything else out of season...but, that is what preparing is all about..i have learned that if i am gonna build something i had better make sure it is gonna stand up to anything that might happen. if i am gonna plant something new i am gonna plant just a little bit of it to make sure it likes growing here-otherwise, i might have a total loss instead of a little harvest with an unknown. hindsight is 20/20...i might as well take the lessons that my mistakes have taught me and put them into practice from the getgo.

    1. Anony, The greenhouse was a kit and not built to me standards. If I would have done it, it might have made it through. I tend to overbuild.
This garden year has been the best I have had in years. Everything was just right. I am hoping the fall gardens will be the same.

  11. Sorry to hear about this streak of bad luck. You always have something to work on whether it be fixing or creating. Sounds like the Good Lord just doesn't want you to sit still, for some reason.
