New RainWater System Items

Even though I am a junk collector and reuse everything I can, I still have to get new items from time to time. I have come to realize there is no possible way to be one hundred percent self sustainable or self reliant no matter how hard you try. There will always be something to buy you cannot make yourself.

For example, to complete the new and improved rainwater harvesting system I had to buy a new pump and solar panel. "Had to" really? Well no, I am sure I could have done without them and kept my old inadequate system, or just used a bucket for that matter.
Don't fret, the old equipment will be reused on another project.
The idea is to deliver enough GPM and PSI into the bathhouse so as to have all the comforts of home, plus to run more than one sprinkler head at a time while watering the gardens. The old system is not capable of handling anything of the sorts.

This new system will up my GPM from one to three and charge the batteries a little quicker every day instead of topping them off every other day. It will up the pressure from 30 to 45 PSI, Plus it will give the option to switch from DC to AC power if needed with a added power supply.

Extra plugs are being added for options to run more DC powered devices if and when needed. This new system will have the capability to expand so it can accommodate the extra amp draw when new items are added on.

This lightweight, portable charger uses amorphous solar technology to charge any 12 Volt rechargeable battery, anywhere. Solar panel works in sunny or cloudy conditions, delivering up to 6 Watts and 0.4Ah for each hour of sunlight. Included blocking diode prevents power loss overnight. Panel features rugged aluminum frame and tempered glass for durability. Includes panel, clamps and 12 feet of wire. 12.5in.L x 12.5in.W x 0.5in.H.

Flow (GPH) 180

Discharge Port (in.) 1/2

Self-Priming Yes

Valves Viton

Manufacturer Warranty 12 months limited parts / No labor

Ship Weight 6.0 lbs

Item# 52063

Above are the descriptions Northern Tool had. The solar panel is a 6 watt panel that will charge the batteries in one day. The calculations on the new system says this is the minimum I can use for my needs. I will be pulling seven amps about 45 minutes to an hour a day. Another 6 watt panel can be wired in when more charging power is needed. The cost for one 15 watt panel is a more than two-6 watt panels by about forty bucks.
I will not be using deep cycled batteries at first because the ones I am using are just fine for now. It is not in the budget to buy two, $120.00 dollar batteries right now. A normal car battery will only last about a year because they are not designed for this type of use. When they start to go bad I will replace one at a time if I can.

I have the box that will house the electrical and pump equipment cut out and ready for assembly. I will post about how I am going to put it all together and hook it all up soon.
I have some other pressing things I need to attend to this weekend so I will not be able to post. Tomorrow will be my last post until Sunday night.

Disclaimer - This may come off as rude, but here you go. So if you get offended easily I would not read on.
For those who know all about this stuff and want to criticize this small system here, keep in mind this is only for the rainwater system to power the bathhouse and to water the gardens with the ability to expand if needed. I do not have seventy five thousand laying around to build a solar tracking system for the whole house, One step at a time my friend. I have done my research diligently on this and I know it would have been easier many other ways. These items fit into my small budget so I do not need all the "You should haves". If you do not like this system then hit the donate button and I will build the system to your specs that you bought.
On the other hand, if you do have some pointers, I am willing to listen and learn. I am not an expert on solar equipment being this is only my second time messing with it.

Drama

I found this on the Urban Dictionary and thought it was fitting.

Drama

A way of relating to the world in which a person consistently overreacts to or greatly exaggerates the importance of benign events.

Typically "drama" is used by people who are chronically bored or those who seek attention.

People who engage in "drama" will usually attempt to drag other people into their dramatic state, as a way of gaining attention or making their own lives more exciting.

Common warning signs/ risk factors of drama or a dramatic person are:

1. Having one supposedly serious problem after another.

2. Constantly telling other people about one's problems.

3. Extreme emotionality or frequently shifting, intense emotions.

4. Claiming to have experienced negative events that are highly implausible.

5. A boring job or mundane life.

6. Making claims without sufficient evidence or a lack of detail about supposedly serious events.

7. A pattern of irrational behavior and reactions to everyday problems.
Sarah had a slight fever and mild cough. She decided to use drama, in order to receive sympathy and attention, so she told everyone she was deathly ill.

Debra lost her keys then spent four hours crying and yelling at her husband.

Mary did not answer her cell phone for an hour, so John feared that she had died in a horrible car accident.

Someone stole Steve's can of Coke from the break room fridge, now he believes that someone at work is trying to destroy him.

Poor, Poor Boy

Everyone knows that BEB is my oldest daughter. I think I have mentioned it a time or two. She is nineteen fixin to turn twenty going on thirty.

BEB came up this weekend to celebrate my birthday and to show her younger sister (Wee) support at the show.  I think I mentioned this yesterday but after the show we went to my Mom and Dad's for a big family and friends birthday bash.

Here's where it gets funny. BEB has this boy that is sweet on her. Now this is not the first time this has happen and I have already ran a couple off in my day.
Being that she was in town, this boy wanted to meet me.
BEB came up to me at the party and asked if he could come over, with a smile I said yes.

I might have mentioned this before too but at 6'4", 275 pounds I am close to being the runt of the family. I have nephews and other family I call huge and if I call someone huge, you know they are huge.

I was having a good time, maybe too good of a time, when I felt the nudge from a family member.
He leaned in and said, "Hey, here he comes"

He walked up the drive and right into the barn. At this point I started to almost feel sorry for the boy because everyone started to gather in a circle around us. He could not have ran away even if he wanted to. I heard cat calls and whistles, someone even said how pretty his mouth was and many agreed.
A hush fell over the crowd when he walked up to me, stuck out his hand and introduced himself.

I said, "Boy, you must not be smart, you just walked right into a hornet's nest"

It all ended well, no blood shed. I did later find out he was really nervous when he pulled up. He told BEB, as he walked up, we just kept getting bigger and bigger.

I do it for her. It's her little test for a boy. If he can deal with the first meet and still hang around and not run for the hills then she will consider dating him. She calls it her "weeding out" process.
I always ask her to let me know how hard to be. If she does not like the guy I run him off, if she likes him we just have a talk, if I like him he can come back.

Oh the joys of fatherhood.

I Know I Shouldn't Tell This But......

I sit here, Sunday evening at about 7:00 reflecting the weekend in it entirety and this is what I came up with.

After we set everything up at the show yesterday morning we still had four hours before it even started so I decided to jump in the truck and run up to the next town to the gun show. I don't get a chance to go to many of them so I figured why not. After all, I would be back in time for the pig show.

I found a firearm I really wanted and have wanted for some time now.  Oh how my mouth watered while I held and stroked it. I set it down, walked away and came right back to it, several times.
I looked over at the wife, back at the weapon and back at the wife over and over.
"Your birthday is Tuesday, just get it" she said.

"Don't you tell me that!" I told her right back.

"You know dad, this would be an impulse buy you might regret tomorrow." The oldest, BEB, said to me. Yes she came up for the weekend to celebrate my birthday and to support Wee in the show. "Put it down, walk away and come back tomorrow if you still want it" she added. She is so smart.

A few more minutes with the gun and several attempts to justify it, I did put it down and walked away. I found the wife over at the stun guns and she was about to do the same thing I almost did. I walked out with every intention of being back today and bringing home my baby.
Today I am the proud owner of the money I would have spent. Yes, I miss holding it and I never got to even call her mine or run a round through her, but maybe some day.

Speaking of celebrating my birthday, remember a few weeks ago when I mentioned we were having a birthday party and that my sister decided to celebrate her wedding on that day, well she did.
All and all the barn party last night was a good time, but I would have never put that burden on my Mom and Dad. Even though she did most of the cooking, hosting a party that big is draining and after everyone goes home, the clean up is over the top.
I think the high light of the evening was when her beautiful $175.00 wedding cake was used in a food fight. Good times right there.
Boy she was fighting mad, but what did she expect, it was a birthday bash.

Drive On Wee

Despite the injury to her pig the youngest girl, (wee) that's what we call her, went ahead and showed.

She already knew what the outcome would be before stepping into the ring, but she pushed on.

"I have came this far daddy, I'm not backing out now even if I have to carry him in there."

She showed with her head held high and was proud to receive her forth place ribbon.

Her three rabbits took First, Second, Third, Grand Champion and Reserve Grand.

Good job Wee, Drive on.

Why?

The night before the show and while shearing the pig, he gashed himself on the watering nipple.
We doused  the wound in some stuff to keep it from getting infected and tried to superglue it shut. The cut is in the back rump area and every time the pigs steps, it opens back up.

A nipple water is a device where the pig can suck on and fresh water comes out. It has a little guard around the bottom to keep it from getting knocked off and leak everywhere. When the pig was getting a hair cut he jumped and ran right along the nipple and it sliced him wide open.
A freak accident. I have never heard it happening before.

Now the pig cannot be showed.

...........................

I've had nothing to say.
I skipped the last two days on writing a blog post because of just that reason. I am still getting on twice a day and reading everyone's posts but I haven't had nothing to add.
Just Living you might say.

We had a goat miscarry twin little girls this week and that was upsetting.

Every night this week when I got home I've been working with the youngest girl on getting her rabbits and equipment ready for the show this weekend.
She planned on showing seven of her prize winning rabbits but of course four of them came down with the sniffles and will not be able to go. All this for three rabbits, yea.

The good thing is that she will still be showing her pig. The teacher of course has sheared all the expected winners and left the ones that she does not think will win to do ourselves. That my friends is the public school system at it's finest.

This show is a warm up for the big one next month. She will still win belt buckles and a little prize money from this show but next month is the youth fair and rodeo and that is where cream gets separated from the milk.

It has pretty much dried out here and the temps have been in the low eighties the last couple of days. The bathhouse water is scalding hot and I love it. The youngest is using it as much as I do now.

That's all I got.

Oh, one more thing, I wanted to give myself something special for my 40th b-day and tried to book a weekend trip to Vegas being I have never been there. Yea, that worked out real good, not!

Wet And Muddy But Productive

Even though Sunday and even today is wet and muddy, we still managed to get some things taken care of.

I got most of the gardens planted late yesterday afternoon and today. We started with the potatoes.

The moon was right to plant the taters between the 15th and the 20th of this month and we just made it All the rain has kept gardening to a minimum but I got tired of sitting around.
Along with the taters, in the raised beds we planted Lettuce, Cabbage, Peas, Carrots and a couple things I can't spell or pronounce. I don't know if I wan't to eat anything like that or not.

The sun finally came out and I was able to get some pics of the Bathhouse with some of the added things.
I am not real happy with the names. Some of them turned out a little dark so I plan to redo them on yellow pine instead of old fence pickets. Maybe that will make them stand out a little better.

Soggy Sunday

It has been raining here for the past couple of days and it ain't right. I had plans this weekend but had to settle for almost doing nothing.

I took advantage of some of the down time to do some major cleaning and scrubbing of the house. I love the smell of bleach in the morning.

Another rainy day activity me and the youngest did was get her rabbits all tattooed up and ready for next weeks show.

All I have is this old eighties model tattoo gun that we used on goats way back then. It still works and does a good job.
Nothing fancy here. We just wrapped them in a towel and poked the ears through. The girl held them close and tight while I did the deed.
After rubbing the left ear with alcohol, I had to find the main veins and avoid them.

The tattoo has to legible in the left ear, right side up so it's always good to punch though a piece of paper before the doing the ear just to make sure you are holding the tool right and the letters or numbers are in right.

After the the tattooing, I rubbed in the ink with a trimmed toothbrush.
I trimmed the toothbrush so the bristles were stiffer and would push the ink into the open holes better.
In a couple of days the ink will be gone leaving a pretty little green F2 behind on this rabbit.

The main reason we have to do this is because if we plan to show them, they have to be marked. Another reason is to identify who is from who.

There you go, a little bit of Animal Husbandry at it's finest

Thank The Stars I Am Four Hours Away

I am sure by now everyone knows BEB is my oldest daughter and she is 4 1/2 hours away at college.
I called her last night to see how everything was going and just like a daddy always knows when something is wrong, I knew something was not right.

She didn't have that chipperness in her voice and avoided my questions a little. Now this was getting serious because she was hiding something from me and I knew she felt terrible about it.
Her whole life I have told her no matter what, you can always talk to me. My love is unconditional and there is nothing she could ever do to ever stop that. So knowing she was hurting by not telling me , was actually hurting me even worse.
After some coxing and reassurance she finally started and boy did she start. She talked so fast I had to slow her down and repeat over half of what she just said.

It all boils down to this, she was assaulted Monday night by a young man at her work. He asked her out and she said no, she was seeing someone. He grabbed her by the arm and squeezed, pulling at her and yelling at her that she was lying to him. She told him to let her go because he was hurting her and he refused still yelling the same thing. She said it one more time and as soon as he said no again she kicked him in his manhood. While he was going down she gave him a nice elbow to the face. (Good Girl) "Dropped him like a sack of potatoes with a little kiss on the way down" she said.

About that time help arrived and instead of asking her if she was okay, they helped the guy up telling him he just his butt kicked by a girl. She told him to never come back in there again and quickly he agreed.
She told me, "Daddy, I had my knife in my back pocket but I knew I didn't need it with this guy." (Good Girl)

She went to the police and did what she had to do to keep this from happening to someone else. She also now has an escort walk with her whenever she has to walk by herself. The school provides this great service for all the young women who do not feel safe.

Here is the reason why she did not want to tell me all that. I have told her, her sisters and their boyfriends that I will spend the rest of my life in prison to protect them even for only one second.
She knows how me and her Momma are when it comes to this and yes, I did want to drive the four hours and start knocking on every door and go through all forty thousand students until I found him.
The good thing is I don't need too. The authorities have it handled and are taking care of the problem.

I applaud her for staying cool, standing up and taking action, I applaud her for going to the police and reporting it. I also applaud her for realizing this might not be a isolated incident and taking precautions to avoid another encounter. Well done Girl.

Well I Never

A new Grocery store chain just came into North Texas and it is one I never heard of before. It is a German owned store that does not have a huge Walmart style selection but what they do have is cheaper than I have seen.
A couple of weeks ago the wife and I visited the store for the first time and found out real quick this was place to go for all the crackers, chips, breads and milk products. Plus, the big uncrowded isles made for a pleasant outing.
One lady stopped us and asked if this was our first time and proceeded to tell us by shopping here she saves around $200 a month.

I guess it was that obvious we were first timers. It didn't help any I was complaining about having to "rent" our cart. It cost me twenty five cents to use their buggy to buy their food.
I had never seen this before and was dumbfounded. I complained all the way through the store and up to the checkout about spending a quarter on a cart. When the checkout lady finally got sick of hearing it she told me I get it back when I put the cart back. She went on to explain that it is an incentive to bring your cart back to the store and lock it up rather than leave it in the parking lot because they do not have cart boys.
Sure enough as soon as I plugged the chain back in, the mechanism squirted my hard earned quarter back out.
I giggled and said out loud, "Well I never"

Why Did You Tell Me That?

A couple of weeks ago I was down the road helping a guy set up his new incubator. He had never set eggs before and wanted to learn everything there was to know about hatching eggs.
When I showed up he started in with the questions and I fired back answer after answer. I told him he might want to write this stuff down because it is a lot of information.
Two minutes in I knew I lost him. You can tell when you loose someone while instructing them because of the blank stare and constant nodding of the head, he was not writing it down.
After a few more minutes I asked him if he got it and even though I knew he didn't he answered yes. We shook hands and he walked me to my truck.

This guy is a junk collector. He is hired to clean out old barns, houses and whatever else that needs to be cleaned up. I have gotten several good items from him in the past and he has even cleaned up some of my junk piles for free. (If I'm throwing it away you know it's junk)
When we got to the truck he told me about a big barn he was hired to clean out and also said he was going to have a sell at the barn and wanted me come by and pick out what I wanted before it began. We ended our visit with me telling him to let me know when the sell was because I would like very much to come and look at all the tools he said was in there.

Yesterday he came by. I gave him the three dozen eggs I had promised for his first try in the new incubator and I asked him about the date of the barn sell.

Without blinking he said, "Oh, we had it yesterday". He continued, "We didn't have a good turn out because of the weather so we ended up giving it all away, but I thought about you and didn't have your phone number to give you a call."

I felt my heart sink and asked what all he gave away knowing good and well I really did not want to know.

"Everything, table saw, miter saw, a truck load of hand tools, every kind of garden tool you can think of, a complete wood shop just about, antiques, old guns and you name it, it was in there but I did think of you and I knew you would want this stuff".

"Why did you tell me that? Why didn't you load your truck up and bring it here if you knew I would want it? Why didn't you tell me the sell was yesterday? Oh my God dude, you could have woke me up in the middle of the night for this"  I started ranting, getting more and more angry.

I had to just go in the house because I was feeling really sick. He did not have a clue, it was all junk to him.
I almost asked for my eggs back.

Lazy Sunday Around The Mini Farm, Continued

Some of the other animals at the Mini Farm got a little pissy with me during feeding time for not making the morning blog post. So I thought I would help them out and do a "continued" Lazy Sunday Post.

They all settled down when  I told them I was saving the best for last.

Y'all have a wonderful week and stay warm.

Lazy Sunday Around The Mini Farm

Lazy Sunday, too cold to do any outside work.

Spent the weekend with all my girls, praying the oldest makes it back to school safe.

Rain Water Harvest System With A First Flush

The couple of days I got home before dark I was able to do some work on the rain water harvesting system.

Even though I had one in place, it was a make shift system and I was loosing many, many gallons of water every time it rained.
Plus I did not have a "First Flush" system in place to catch the contaminates before it dumped into the tanks.

What contaminates you ask, after all it's clean rain water right?

My house like most is an asphalt shingled roof and every time it rains some of the particles from the shingles wash off into the gutter making their way to the bottom of the storage tanks.
Plus there is the dirt and dust that collects on the roof from the normal everyday wind. We also live in a farming community way out in the boondocks where they still spray the fields with airplanes. Even though they are careful, I am sure some of the chemicals still settle on the roof tops of our houses.

That is where the First Flush system helps out. It will collect around the first five to seven gallons of rain water and then bypass the flush system leaving the bad water in the pipe and dumping the clean water into the tank. The lingering heavier particles will still be able to fall to the bottom even during the bypass stage.
This system will reduce the build up of foreign matter in the tanks and increase the quality of the water.

The bypass is made up of 3" pipe, two 2"X3" adapters, a 3" clean out, a 2" sweeping "T" and an empty water bottle. This picture shows the bottle being placed in the bottom of the pipe then clean out cap is screwed back on finger tight.
When the water fills the pipe, the bottle floats and when it reaches the 2"X3" reducer, it clogs the hole and the water is bypassed into the tank. After the water is bypassed any left over heavy particles will hit the bottle and still sink to the bottom of the pipe.

After the rain has ended, all I have to do is unscrew the clean out cap on the bottom and drain the pipe.

Even though every rain water harvesting system should have a first flush, it will not collect 100% of everything. This water will be filtered enough to put on the gardens and to be used for the animals, but for the bathhouse I still want it to be filtered a little more.
Before it goes into the bathhouse, the water will be filtered using a hot tub filter.

Just wanted to share this. I thought somebody might need it in the future.

Promised Picture

Here's the big boy.

This is the rooster that can't figure out heads from tails. He is a big beautiful rooster that should be doing his job. It will hard to replace him if he doesn't straighten up. I am ordering a couple more roosters in the same breed and with different colors but it will be a year before they are ready.

Liquid Soap

It's that time again.

Last time I made a batch of powder laundry soap and it worked really well. It did not last as long as I wished it would have for the amount of product used, but never the less it worked.

This time I decided to go with a tried and true method that many of y'all already use. It is the Duggar's favorite soap recipe. It can be found at Duggar Liquid Laundry Soap
This recipe makes 10 gallons of soap and around 640 loads for a front load machine. I would have to make three powder batches to get that.
It took a total of 15 minutes to make.
This might be the one.

Stupid Rooster

For the past four months our incubators, hatchers and brooders have been running. Total estimated cost to run them per month is around $60.00  to $75.00

Potential long term income from one months operation with a 100% hatch and mortality rate is around $3700.00
(that is hatching 210 eggs and selling those chicks at eight months old and does not factor in the cost of feed. For this post, I am just focusing on one months electricity use to continuity run the devices and re-setting)

I learned long ago that you never count your chickens before they hatch. You never really understand that statement until you do so and get burnt. Even taking that advise, I still count on a percentage. If I set 200 eggs and figure a modest 60% hatch rate then I can almost for sure count on 120 chicks.
Last year after building my own incubator, my hatch rate increased from 40% to 95%. That was something I could count on. It hit it every time.

Saying that, I counted on that rate this year as well. My first batch hatched at a neck breaking 1%. Thinking that it was just a first time goof, I sat another batch. That one hatched at 36% and the next one after that at 7%.
It is now coming down to the end of the third batch of eggs and I will candle them this weekend.
Everything is the same. My incubator is set right, with the right humidity, right turners, right everything. I am doing nothing different with these eggs than I was doing with the 95% eggs.
What has hatched out now will not even pay for the electricity it took to hatch and brood them. It will actually be cheaper to buy chicks than to keep doing it this way.

I have beat myself up really bad on this trying to figure it out until last night. I was sitting out back thinking what in the world is going on with these eggs and then I saw the problem, It's my rooster. I saw him do it five times in a row.

Last year I had to sell all my breeding stock and start over. All the chickens I have now are young and just started laying four months ago. That was one of the reasons I figured for the bad rate on the first hatch. Maybe they were all pullet eggs and not fertile.

The stupid rooster is mounting the hens wrong. He is mounting them backwards, head to butt. (Picture it so I do not have to describe it any further)
This is why when I candle the eggs just a few are fertile, but most are not. Sometimes he does get it right.
I know what I need to do, I need to get a smarter Rooster because I am not going to show him how it's done.
(Even though this is really not funny, it kinda it and deserves a good laugh)

Isn't It Ironic

Last weekend The Mini Farm had customers. It was good to sell some animals and start having income from the farm once again.
After last years disasters, it has been a steady climb back up a slippery hill. The incubators have not shut off in last four months and we started to have animals everywhere. Though we still have a long way to go to be where we were at this time last year, it is still progress.

It was good to show off the Bathhouse and hear the Ohhhs' and Awwws'. The Supporter name plates are up and I made a point to show them off for all to see.
We still need to grow a little more before we can actually do what we did last year and open the Mini Farm one weekend a month and sell the crafts and homemade items. The wife is steadily making more and more stuff to fill the tables.

Saying all that, just as soon as we started selling, the well started giving us fits again. It seems like every time we get going something tells us "no your not." Last night I had to baby sit it while everyone took showers. It was cloudy and cold yesterday or they would have used the bathhouse instead.
I could not help but laugh out loud, and wondered how much this was going to cost.

Sunday With This And That

I just picked this little wood stove up, isn't it cute. The guy I got it from needed a saw I was not using and I needed this little potbelly so we traded. I put a regular kitchen chair next to it to show just how small this thing is. I have never seen one like it.
After some new paint I think it will be a great addition to the bathhouse.
Homemade, Grape wine and a Mason Jar.
Hmmm, I have heard that somewhere before.
What better way to kick back and watch the Super Bowl.
