Harvest Time

With all the partying behind us now, it is time to get back to work. Yesterday the wife went out and did the first big harvest of the year from the gardens.

This will be enough onions and carrots to last us all year. We still have some from last year we need to eat up and make room for this bunch.

The onions will be put in cheap panty hoes and hung up. The carrots will be cut up, blanched and frozen. Last year we sliced and canned them, but this year we are going to do it different. I am needing more shelf space so whatever I can put in the freezers the better. This is under half of what is still to come. The rest of the carrots need a little more time.

The garlic has already been harvested and stored, the corn will take another two to three weeks then it will be ready. The peppers are making, the tomatoes are just starting to turn and there are blooms on the cucumbers. The soil less potatoes are actually making potatoes now, who would have thunk it? This weekend I plan to rob some and see how they taste.

The heat has hit us with force. We will have the first 100 degree day tomorrow with 98 for today. The good thing is we have been lucky enough to have had rain every couple of days for the last month so the rain water tanks are full.
As it stands at this moment, most everything is good even though I apparently can't cook BBQ anymore.

  1. Lucky you - I've just planted my first lot of onions, and my garlic last year was disappointing.

    1. Sorry to hear about your garlic Dani. These onions were planted at the end of January. We will have one more harvest of them this year. They say you can never have too many but I think I might.

  2. Wow, nice harvest! What kind of carrots are those? We never have any luck with carrots. We've had great luck growing onions when we purchased onion plants rather than sets. With the late frosts and rainy weather that we've had, our garden is running late this year. A lot of folks lost their crops to late frosts. It's a good thing that we were running behind. No loss for us, just later than usual.

    1. Thanks WVS,
I should know what kind they are but I cant remember at the moment. We never had luck with them either until I started using a filler in the soil to keep it from compacting, like Perlight or Compost.
The onions all came from sets and they were froze three times. I never lost any of them.
The problem with a late garden here in North Texas is the heat will get it before it is done. That is why I put mine in a little early and hope for the best.
      Thanks for the comment.

  4. Outstanding. The gardens here in MN are about a month behind, as are every farm field. This summer for us is more then likely back to normal, after several years of drought. Rain or T-storms daily. Everything is green. Alot cooler the Florida for sure. I wish we had a place to plant, no luck here.

  5. MDR,

Beautiful looking harvest.....I'm so green here, lol....
my garden just isn't doing much this year (it's trying). We had to start planting late because of the weather, and not it's in the high 90's. I may end up with vegetables fried from the heat.

    1. Thanks Sandy,
I understand about planting late. We decided to go for it early and it was tough. We ended up have three more freezes after we planted, but we made it through.

    1. Thanks for the concern Anony. This is the way we have stored the onions for about three years now and have not had any issues as of yet. Saying all that they my rot now.
Potatoes, yes we put them in a basket and put in the cool dark room.
      Thanks for the comment.
